I’m never gonna be who I thought I would

All through our lives we’ve been taught to make a difference, do more, be more!

And then it gets to a point- and here may be it’s the impending Birthday Me talking, where you worry- have I actually achieved what I was supposed to have… or was it all just castles in the sky created by my indulgent, loving parents (who btw are throwing a birthday dinner for me tonight- so yay!)… so I decided to take stock!

Well I started out right, topped school, went to Stanford and then I left Stanford prematurely to start acting. Interesting choice!

I started doing films, and started a Production house. One film became seven; the production house put on some truly memorable plays. Each play made me learn to give back to society and be really grateful as to where I was.

I got sick, got Multiple Sclerosis, was told I wouldn’t move but Docs ain’t got nothin on my stubbornness! So up I was and back at work!

I wrote and here I shall boast a bit (allow me, it’s my blog) a truly exceptional play where we toured the world, won numerous World Awards and gave lots of money to a cause I truly supported.

I found a tumour in the pituitary in my brain- didn’t waste a second ,started another company and an Not for profit charity, moved offices.

I have directed TV, commercials, digital, short films and anything that has a story- I have learnt to tell.

I have loved one dog with all my soul and another takes up my heart.

I see my family regularly and it’s still not enough; spend every waking moment I can stalking my husband, who annoys me , infuriates me, challenges me, engages me and loves me.

I’ve not done anything I planned to do when I was a child- but I’ve done so much more than I dreamed of. I’ve lived a life that I couldn’t have imagined because you can’t write lives like mine…

I may not be who I was but I am so excited to see who I will become…so as I countdown the days to my birthday…I’m going to celebrate who I have become with all those who’ve made me who I am on this crazy journey we call life.

P.s. (Palat says)-: You may not be where you think you want to be; but you are exactly where you are supposed to be right now!

Instagram your life TODAY! (MY NEW TIMES OF INDIA CELEBRITY BLOG POST!)

I now write a weekly blog for the Times of India – Divya Palat’s Blog! So do check it out!

This week’s big news was that Facebook was acquiring the young, fun Free photo sharing application- Instagram for ONE BILLION DOLLARS!

The young co-founders are both Ex- Stanford Students- Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and this being my alma mater I naturally took a very eager interest in the sale and all the reports about it!

What is Instagram? It, very simply is a photo sharing application that adds fun, fabulous, digital filters to your photographs making them absolutely wonderful and makes you proud of sharing the most beautiful of sunsets and even the messiest of garbage cans! Instagram can make everything look cool!

And why should one billion be such a shock to writers or analysts across the world?! Today is the day of the 140 characters or less status updates where we update our Facebook status almost before we wake up every morning! It is a world where you are judged not by the actual friends you have but by the virtual followers that you possess, where a status update is more true to readers than ever actually seeing you, talking to you or even meeting you! And if status and image is so important-what’s a billion dollars  for an app that can make even a dirty toilet look great?!

Today you are judged by the photos you post, by the updates you make , by the Linked In contacts you have and it’s social networking suicide to not have friend’s ‘Like’ your posts! It is a world where reality has never been less real and unfortunately despite the fact that we can connect with people we lost touch with several years ago; we are often more disconnected than we ever have been!

Phone conversations have been replaced by tweets. But there’s often a lot more going on in a person’s life which can’t be fit into a line or less but guess what if you have more to say…well often there’s nobody to hear it or read it!
Be everything you want to be except yourself….that is often the mantra of Social Networking. How else can you justify bloggers and tweeters behind pseudonyms who have hundreds of thousands of followers? Today we hide behind a mask because often we fear that our most honest thought, our most basic of feelings might be considered too simplistic, too plain or just too boring,a word that our generation fears more than life itself!

So we jazz up our thoughts, we mask our feelings and we hide our flaws behind fancy sayings and proverbs because our virtual friends must assume our virtual reality is our reality. They would most definitely leave us if they knew that our virtual reality was just virtual and nowhere close to our reality. And so the charade continues!

And so but naturally when there is an app which can make decent photographs look great, we all jumped on the band wagon! You couldn’t just mail photographs or print them – it had to be Instagramed! They made our normal reality and our actual photographs look so much cooler and so it worked! Wish there was an app that made our normal day and simple thought seem cooler. Wish there was an app to add a new colour to your black and white day…. well give it time. I’m sure there are already plans afoot to Instagram your ‘normal’ life! Kevin, Mike…thoughts?

P.s (Palat says) The week is already overwhelming me but my status update says ‘Excited! Fab, fun week ahead! Yay life!’

But on a much happier, more positive note- This week was my Malayalee New Year. So… to brighter dawns and to more fruitful tomorrows- Happy Vishu all!

The most creative you can be is when you stop over-thinking it!

More blogs, more script ideas, more show thoughts and it’s been just a few days away from the rat race!

Sometimes a little distance does a lot of good..I am back tomorrow with more energy and enthusiasm and more ideas! Am gonna try and let the rat race NOT suck it out of me again!

Work starts on the finished script as I return! Yay to new beginnings!

Also signed up for some online courses for classes I never got the chance to take while in college!!!! So new classes starting soon……double YAY!!

Time travails!

So we each run around talking about how we don’t have time. we don’t have time for this or that….and that we wish we had more hours in a day….but do we actually make PRODUCTIVE use of that time…???

an actor with a day job i was speaking to once told me after a rehearsal that his job with a well known tv channel was really not that challenging… he came in by 10. 10- 10:30 he had breakfast with a co-worked either at his desk or at the co-workers desk. and then he went back to work, where he logs in to gmail chat…finishes his work in an hour and chats online the rest of the time or better still facebook’s! then it’s lunch and he and his group usually take a long lunch from 1- 2:30, after which it’s an hours work and then off to tea from 3:30-4:30 and they pack up by about 5:30 ish…

Productively he has 2 hrs of work…the rest of the day the company seems to just want seat-warmers!

that’s the one thing i learnt at stanford…it didn’t matter how much time u spent at the books…what mattered was what you gave in….results mattered….it didn’t matter whether you could absorb what you read in an hour and party the entire weekend , starting friday morning…it mattered what you gave in at the next class.

companies lay too much importance on desk sitting and less importance on actual competence! my friend at stanford finished his entire under-graduation a year early–where did he find time, with his excess partying and trillion extra-curricular activities…i don’t know…but i do know that he was valued on his work and results an not how much time he sat looking at books! sitting for 8 hrs at your desk does not make you productive, finishing deadlines, completing tasks- that does!

google and so many other software companies in palo alto have chilling rooms where employees can play ps3 , bounce basket balls ..even go for a swim-DURING THE WORK DAY to INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY!!! there is even a software giant who has a sleep room for a quick afternoon siesta!

PRODUCTIVITY is about making optimal use of your energies …

think about it….

walk into an office and you’ll see 9/10 employees on social networking sites. that’s great- they need the downtime! but wouldn’t it be better if you worked with them basis deadlines and not basis 9-5 p.m.!that way maybe you’ll even end up saving on electricity bills and have a happier group of co-workers….

so today….just start setting personal deadlines for you and those in your team (WORKABLE personal deadlines) and then let them be adults and make them deliver on their deadline… surprisingly ,like what happens in palo alto software companies a lot of employees because of the time freedom they get end up working a lot later and a lot harder….so its win-win!
